Love, Groucho: Letters from Groucho Marx to His Daughter Miriam
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (05 February, 2002)
Authors: Miriam Marx Allen, Miriam M. Allen, and Dick Cavett
Average review score:

Groucho...no difference between letters and screen.
What better way to judge a man than to see his unedited, straight from the hip letters to his daughter. I have read just about all there is to read on Groucho, but this is my most prized possession. This book shows Groucho's philosophies on family relations, government, love and home life. I felt like a fly on the wall of a private phone conversation. The letters revealed a man who had a heart of gold and a tongue of silver. I was amazed at how his wit in letters was no different from that on the screen. Big thanks to Miriam for letting us look at the private side of one of the funniest men ever.

It made me laugh, it made me cry, but it also made me think!
These letters show a very human side of Groucho Marx. Through all this you get to experience first hand his great wit and sense of word play. There were many dimensions to this man, and these letters provide an inside look at what made this man tick. Many thanks should be given to his daughter Miriam for this personal look into her father's life.

Making Wheels Easy (Old West Collection of WoodWorking Pattern Books)
Published in Spiral-bound by Windy Hill Woods (01 January, 1995)
Authors: Ron Hoke, Pat Hoke, Kelly Allen, and Donald Allen
Average review score:

Great learning tool
Greetings!

You sure named this pattern book correctly, "Making Wheels Easy" is exactly as the name implies. If a person can read and follow instructions, he can make a fine wooden wagon wheel with little difficulty.

At first I thought the $20.00 price of the pattern book was a little high, boy was I wrong! This book is worth every penny of the asking price. A lot of thought and preparation went into putting this book together. The book lays flat when opened to any page. Only one side of a page is printed so you always have a blank facing page for shop notes. The instructions are very easy to follow. It's almost as if you were looking over my shoulder, guiding me every step of the way. The full size patterns are easy to use. The patterns for the jigs, and the jigs themselves, are also very easy to use.

I made two 16 inch wheels using this pattern book. The first one I made was without using the jigs so I could get the "feel" of the project. The second wheel was made using the jigs. Any more wheels I make will be made with the jigs, the time saved, and the improvement in the accuracy of the cuts, make the jigs well worth while. The wheels themselves are well made and very sturdy.

This pattern book, Making Wheels Easy, is much more then a book that teaches someone a very easy way to make wheels. It's a book that opens the doors to all kinds of possibilities. Such as;

A wagon wheel trellis for vines or roses, Wagon wheel lawn furniture, Wagon wheel mailbox stand, Wagon wheels to mark the sides of a driveway, How about a wagon wheel fence? Or fence gates? Wagon wheel lamps, wagon wheel tables, Wagon wheel head and foot boards

The list of possibilities goes on and on. With this book, a few tools, and some lumber, a guy can accomplish a lot.

Thank you for your efforts in the production of such a fine learning tool. I am now ready to move on to your other pattern book, "Working Wagon Wheels"

Ron Ainsworth

Clear, simple text and great photos make it easy to follow.
Windy Hill Woods makes good on the promise implied by the title of its book Making Wheels Easy . This well thought out project book contains accurate templates, clearly written text and illuminating photographic illustrations makes the complex and exacting task of wooden wheel construction easy and enjoyable. Even a slightly below average woodworker such as myself was able to turn out some pretty good looking wheels. Best of all I accomplished this without the frustrations caused by project designers who have never built anything except a pile of papers. It is obvious to me that this book was written by a craftsperson who actually has built wooden wheels. The cautions and warnings in the text anticipate the "hard parts" and warn the woodworker of potential pitfalls The first set I made are on a miniature Prairie Schooner used in a local museum's education program. My wife is already thinking up projects that will incorporate the latest additions to my woodworking skills.

Margaret Mitchell, Reporter
Published in Hardcover by Hill Street Press (01 January, 2002)
Authors: Margaret Mitchell and Patrick Allen
Average review score:

New insights into this great writer!
Completely charming and so evocative of its time and the diamond-hard sensibility of its author, this collection shows that there is so much more to Margaret Mitchell than her single book. Highly recommended not only for Gone With the Wind fans but for anyone interested in women's and journalism history, the Jazz Age, or Atlanta in a simpler time.

Beyond "Gone With the Wind"
This is a rare and wonderful collection of little known and lost journalism by a very under-rated author. The book was published in honor of Margaret Mitchell's 100th birthday (she was born on November 8, 1900) and it is a fitting centennial tribute. Mitchell writes so engagingly about a variety of things--both the frivolous and the serious. Although Mitchell was, of course, reporting for her hometown Atlanta Journal Magazine, and was therefore putatively neutral, her great ability to draw character and see quirky and telling detail makes this selection of pieces from the early twenties seem more like fiction, even autobiography. Some of the slang and diction is dated, but to me that only made it more charming. Nothing could be more different from the Civil War material we all know from Mitchell, yet the sharp eye and flawless style are clearly evident--a full decade before her great "Gone With the Wind."

Marilyn by Moonlight: A Remembrance in Rare Photos
It is just a little difficult to state; at the risk of sounding completely redundant, however, "beauty is beauty". When it came to Marilyn Monroe, she was synonomous with the word. This book was written by one of Monroe's fan clubs, (Marilyn Remembered Club). It presents to the reader previously unpublished photos of her during her childhood thru the last days of her life. The book features truly enjoyable and memorable photos from some of her most significant films. Some even show her posing candidly with fans off the set in her "Sugar" Kovalschek costume, from "Some Like It Hot". "Marilyn By Moolight: A Remembrance in Rare Photos", should be a must have addition to any serious Monroe fan as well as any person who enjoys viewing a person who in my opinion personified,(and still does), what feminine beauty is all about. I heartily endorse this book. It is a proud addition to my extensive "Marilyn Monroe" collection.

excellent photo book
This book is written by the Marilyn Remembered Fan Club with Quotes by Marilyn Monroe and containes some of the most beautiful digitally restored photo's of her. This is one book to own if you are looking for a MM book.

The Marshall Plan
Published in Hardcover by Berg Pub Ltd (March, 1993)
Authors: Allen W. Dulles and Michael Wala
Average review score:

Essential reading for understanding applied social analysis.
It is rare to get an insider's view of an important policy decision written with this much thoroughness and clarity. The Marshall plan is one of the most important things America has ever done in world affairs, and the prototype and foundation of the transformation of international relations that America is presently leading. This is its best account. The authors of the Marshal plan were democratic visionaries solidly grounded in pragmatic realities. Allan Dulles speaks for them. (Do not confuse Allan with his brother).

Mathematics and Humor
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (November, 1982)
Author: John Allen. Paulos
Average review score:

Interesting take on two subjects
One thing that most people will appreciate in this book is a better understanding of their mathematics professor's strange sense of humor. I agree with the author that most mathematicians do show a certain, recognizable style of humor. He goes on to explain the ways that mathematical reasoning resembles, and therefore illuminates humor. This book provides an entertaining introduction to mathematical concepts and theory. I'm not sure that I would recommend it as highly on the other side--to comedians. This is more of a philosopher's approach to humor.

serious study of jokes and their mathematical structure
Given the book's title I was surprised at its contents. It contains a lot of very good jokes, to be sure, but it is a serious study of the mathematical structure of certain kinds of jokes. The introductory discussion of the history of ideas about humor was particularly valuable. Very satisfying read!

Matters of the Heart

Her very best so far
This is the 13th of some 30 books written by Charlotte V. Allen and I think, so far, it is the best. I am slowely working my way through all of them. I loved Francis, Hadleigh and Bonita. It got somewhat farfetched toward the end but I loved it. Charlotte, write another one like this or maybe you already have and I haven't gotten to it yet.

Storyline ....
from the back of the original paperback book: "They were the unforgettable, passionate men and women bound together by an era of turmoil and tears ... blood and passion, by a search for love, happiness and fulfillment ... FRANCES -- a beautiful, pround Englishwoman torn between her dreams of romance and the reality of her marriage, about to be swept into a maelstrom of secrets, betrayal and forbidden sensuality. HADLEIGH -- the daughter, alone and vulnerable, too hungry for love to know the difference between caring and desire. ARTHUR -- the husbandf, obsessed with a woman he should never forgive, but whom he cannot forget ... or stop wanting. AMANDA -- the other woman, very lovely, very desirable, very devious, ready to fight for the man she loves, ready to destroy the rival she hates. Sweeping across decades from war-torn London to the promising landscapes of New York and Connecticut, from the stormy secrets of the soul to ... MATTERS OF THE HEART."
